IT’S 1991, AND THE WORLD IS NO LONGER THE SAME

THE CITY OF PRIPYAT
Pripyat stands as the emblematic city of this new world; it’s the closest to the disaster—where the first sightings of mutants and LEAP took place—and now it’s almost entirely deserted. However, within its boundaries you may encounter Skelets, a few Rassvet outposts and field personnel (p. 38), Krae secret labs (p. 35), and eridite seekers. Many places tell tales of a recent past, cloaked in whispered fears, falsehoods, and unexplained mysteries. Those who walk these streets know how to navigate and are driven by strong motivation and courage.
THE SOCIETY
The Soviet Union established specific city planning models, especially for those near nuclear sites or large factories. Cities like Pripyat, before the disaster struck. One of these models consists of an industrial hub, near which residential and production areas stand, forming the core around which the city develops.
In large cities, government buildings and centers of power are located. Typically situated in central or strategic areas, these are the fulcrum of the regime’s decision-making and political activities.
POWER VS REVOLUTION
A central theme of the game is the fight for eridite exploitation, a material that not only harms the human organism in barely understood ways, but also spawns monstrosities like mutants (and more). The government’s might, however, is merely the shadow of a religious sect which gained incredible strength and power after Eridu’s impact on Earth.
Indeed, there is a connection between the asteroid collision and a sacred mission born from a belief that sees eridite as a divine sign capable of guiding humanity toward the future and progress, at all costs.
THE SKELETS: THE ASHEN PEOPLE
In a short time, human mutations became a true phobia, and then a factor of discrimination. After the disaster, radiation, along with harmful effects of eridite, contaminated most of the inhabitants of the impacted areas, creating a new “middle folk”, no longer fully human, but mutated. Emaciated in appearance, with hollow and skeletal faces, the inhabitants of the Exclusion Zone were first subjected to the radioactive dread, and then abandoned by both civil society and the State.
This people returned to the dead cities, discovering a new strength and an extraordinary power, albeit at a cost in terms of physical health. Here, a new anti-eridite spirituality has emerged, aiming for its destruction. A tribal society on the edge of civilization—these are the Skelets (that is “skeletons”), also known as metamutants.
RELIGIOUS SECTS IN USSR
In the nation of atheism, new faiths emerge. With the rise of a secret and concealed religious sect pulling the strings of power, the regime has grown more tolerant toward spirituality, culminating in the liberalization of cults. However, this hasn’t undermined the pragmatism and centrality of the State in every aspect of life, and the role of religions remains marginal, at least seemingly.
ERIDITE SEEKERS
Many people are interested in recovering eridite to sell it and get rich. These “adventurers”, eager for wealth, risk their lives to ensure a comfortable future.
