When a character dies in an RPG campaign, it’s one of the most delicate and dramatically rich moments at the table. The question “what should you do when a PC dies?” doesn’t have a single answer, but the international RPG community offers plenty of valuable suggestions.
Many GMs and players agree that allowing a final scene for a deceased character is essential: it lets the player express secrets, vulnerabilities, hopes—or even influence other players in the party. Taking inspiration from Death in Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books can add real depth: Death can be ironic, compassionate, or judgemental depending on your mood and setting.
Introduce a brief scene where Death (or a similar entity) greets the character. This helps players who struggle to improvise and lets you ask questions to encourage reflection.
Customize Death’s appearance to fit your setting: an angel, a god, a judge, even an AI for sci-fi campaigns.
Offer this moment to important NPCs and villains as well; seeing an antagonist repent or boast can add narrative weight to your story.
Let players take turns portraying Death, making the conversation interactive and less “solitary” for the GM.
In some games, death is not final: the last scene can offer a chance to negotiate, bargain, or change the PC’s fate.
Adjust the narrative: you may choose that only the dying character sees Death, making the moment unique and secret.
Not every player is ready to face a closing scene. Some prefer it “off-screen,” others use it for powerful roleplay. It’s up to the GM and group to read the room; the key is to offer opportunities without forcing anyone who feels uncomfortable.
Handling the death of an RPG character opens important narrative opportunities. A final scene, Death’s personification, and freedom of choice enrich your campaigns and make for memorable sessions. Try the different approaches suggested by the community and discover what works best at your table!
